A minnow seine (pronounced sane) is a net attached to poles to catch live bait such as minnows, crawfish, and hellgrammites. What are hellgrammites you ask (pic 1 below)? They are the larval stage of the Dobson fly. We seined in the crick, ok creek but I grew up calling it a crick. I (Kathy) used to minnow seine as a kid, I just didn't know it was called seining. There was a crick under Renner Road near Timberbrook that I played in frequently. A childhood friend and I took window screens from my house and used them to catch crawfish (crawdads if you call creeks cricks). Who knew I was actually catching bait? I just liked seeing the critters and splashing in the water with friends. Our parents were not happy when we put our catch in the kiddie pool in my friend's backyard. We were told to immediately return them to their home. The water was rushing compared to our previous visits. Even though it was no higher than our thighs, we found it difficult to walk in the current to seine. So PLEASE BEWARE of any fast running water, even if it's shallow. In addition to the hellgrammite (my first), we caught a couple minnows and quite a few crawfish. We put the bait back because we decided not to fish since the water was too rough. We were like kids sitting on the bank talking, playing in the water and just enjoying nature's beauty. BEWARE of water after storms and days of rain.
